He really was quite enigmatic this Erik guy. Very tall. Very pretty. She'd still rather have Corin any day, but she probably wouldn't say no in a hurry. He also had a very good handshake and the way he spoke about what he was doing with the Brotherhood gave her the impression he was a very intelligent man. Taryn thought that his comment about quality over quantity seemed a little off, given that this whole Brotherhood thing was surely about grouping together and uniting mutants but she brushed it off.
As they were conversing and she began to feel more comfortable, Taryn took the time to look around the large building in which the Headquarters were currently housed. It was rather grand, clearly a full estate. Which lead her to wonder where this man got the money for such a place. Maybe he was born into a wealthy family like she was, or maybe he earned it. Though for something of this size he'd have to be amazing at whatever it was he did for a career. Unless of course he stole it. It suddenly dawned on Taryn that he really didn't know much about this guy, apart from what Corin had told her. And that was very little. Suddenly his question as to whether or not she would be staying seemed a little daunting. But there were others here, she would be fine.
'If it's all the same to you, I'd like to stay, probably just for a few days. I came here to meet other mutants like us, and the longer I can stay the better an idea I think I'll get of what people like us can do.' And god was she excited to be here and doing this. So many mutants here, there would be no way she could find out enough about them in just the one day. Taryn was sure she could learn from so many of them, and maybe even teach them a thing or two, it would be a learning experience for everyone. Providing she didnt go around accidentally suppressing people's powers as soon as she found them out.

The fortune teller seemed to appreciate that people had given her a good reputation, so that made Taryn feel slightly more comfortable with this whole thing. Hearing that the cards wouldn't be able to be a little more specific in finding her sister was slightly disheartening, but she felt the need to at least seek some advice from somewhere and this seemed as good a place as any. So she took the deck of cards and shuffled and then cut them as instructed.
'So, this reading won't be specific, I know that now. But if it can help me with any sort of guidance, or if you yourself might know of anything, I'd be very appreciative of whatever is said. What was your name, sorry? Someone mentioned it before but it's completely slipped my mind, been a bit preoccupied recently.' In all the time she'd spent being in and out of the various different Brotherhood headquarters you would think she would have caught the woman's name, but so many people have been and gone before it's not difficult to lose track of who's who in this outfit.

'It's a game of luck for everyone'. Everyone that doesn't have the ability to manipulate probabilities that is. She knew Corin's power, and were they not in such a public place there would be no beating about the bush, but for now Taryn would have to survive the charade. He took a drink of his whiskey, and pulled a subtle face of distaste before rapidly covering his expression. Taryn wasn't a fan of whiskey either so she understood Corin's reaction, and took a sip of her cocktail to stifle any potential brewing smile or laughter at his expense. It took a few moments of her wondering just how often Corin did this whole 'pretending to like whiskey' thing before Taryn noticed that he'd actually asked her a question. And also called her Miss. That didn't happen often. She gave a smile 'Maybe I just like casinos, have you considered that? All the lights and sounds of people losing their life savings, and occasionally winning them back. Regardless of the tales of some casinos, I'm far more interested in the tales I've heard of you Mr Danvers.' If he doesnt get the gist that she knows what he can do after that then this would be a very difficult task indeed.
After this, she chanced a look at the roulette wheel, seeing as Corin had decided to not even pretend to be interested in the outcome. Taryn knew it would land on eighteen, he'd used his power to manipulate the outcome, nothing could go wrong. Or so she thought. The ball landed on number twenty-six. A number that most certainly wasn't eighteen. There were disgruntled moans around the table, but none of them were as shocked as Taryn, and if Corin had noticed, she was sure he'd be sharing her reaction. She turned to look at him in disbelief and in the process knocked over his whiskey. Without thinking she cast out her hand and cast the purple ring of light around the glass just before it hit the ground, cancelling out all motion of the drink and preventing a spillage. She let out a sigh of relief, before realising what she'd done and cursing herself under her breath.

Born: 20 February 1942
1942-57: Lived solely with her mother, Esther, while her father, William, was away for the war. When he returned in ’45 they remained in Aurora, IL where Taryn first started exhibiting and hiding her powers. Her refusal to accept her abilities and constant attempts to suppress both her power and her emotions erupted in the incident that killed her parents unexpectedly.
1957-61: Living with Aunt, Uncle and Cousin in Coventry, England. This side of the family never accepted her father’s decision to move to America and marry a woman of a lower social class, therefore treat Taryn like she is worth less than them. Here she trained herself to control her power and began testing what her limits were when possible. Also learns that her father had another daughter before her named Annabelle, who was declared dead after being missing for so long.
1961-beginning of ’63: Moves away from Coventry to London when she turns 19, gets a small flat and a job in a local café as a waitress. Enjoys her new freedom and continues practising her abilities and begins wondering if there are others like her out there. She begins gathering a pool of sources and information given her monetary background and intelligence.
1963/64: Takes an extended holiday to the USA, initially to see old friends of hers and her parents, but eventually to seek out other mutants, including the Brotherhood. When the majority of younger Taryn’s posts in America take place.
-Twenty On Red (Corin)
-More Like Me (Erik)
1964-72: Returns to England, though returns to America several times during this period to see friends old and new
1972-75: Learns that Annabelle is still alive, and therefore goes out looking for her. Is informed of Annabelle’s status as a mutant and that that was the reason for her disappearance. Eventually finds her sister, who has been brainwashed into hunting down and neutralising other mutants. Taryn is forced to stop her, but given that Annabelle has the ability to overpower her younger sister, the only thing Taryn can do is kill her. This obviously traumatises her, given that she has now killed three of her own family members. Taryn is never the same again.
-The Cards Lie About As Much As I Do (Magda)
1975 onward: Taryn moves to the US permanently and lists herself as a mercenary, taking no sides in the growing war between Humans and Mutants. She sees the war as fruitless and as such feels that her input will be irrelevant. She doesn’t refrain from using her powers like some would think she would, given that doing so only seems to cause even more damage. Instead, she uses her powers to prove that mutants can be a very destructive force, and those who can get away with it should use them only when truly necessary. As her hatred for them grows, so do her abilities. She now freely has the ability to suppress emotions in others, where before it was only accessible in her own states of heightened emotion, though using this power is still difficult and doesn’t always work. She has also now learnt that she can more than equal the force of something she is opposing, making any attacks against her more dangerous for the attacker. She is often seen with members of both the X-men and Brotherhood, having allies in both camps, though she refrains from having close personal relationships for obvious reasons.

This was it. Taryn had met another mutant in Corin, and had been opened up to a whole new world, one where she wasn't alone anymore. All those years after discovering her powers and the trauma that caused, thinking that she couldn't be the only one and now, now she had proof. And was about to get a whole lot more. Corin had given her an address and a name, the opportunity she needed to meet with the Brotherhood she had heard about before even coming over to America. Erik - Magneto as he also seems to go by - seems to have a been a friend Cor's, and so now Taryn would aim to be the same.
So here she was, in the headquarters of the Brotherhood, waiting to meet up with the leader himself. She wondered what he'd be like, tall she imagined, enigmatic, charismatic, everything you'd expect a good leader to be like. Of course she was being a bit quick and figured that regardless of how she thought he would be he more than likely wouldn't. Taryn was fine with that though, he obviously had what it took to head up and band together such a diverse group of people.
Then all of a sudden he was there. Tall, like she thought, a little rougher around the edges than Corin, but still a very good looking man. Definitely older than her, but she was only 21 so that would make sense. 'You must be Erik, I take it? Glad to finally meet you, Corin spoke very highly of you. Certainly a nice place you've got here, lots of good people by the looks of it.' She gave a smile and offered her hand. Gotta make a good impression with these kinds of people.

Taryn stood just outside the door for a moment. She had never actually gone to get her fortune told from Tarot cards before, but figured that this was as good a time as any to start. Annabelle, her sister, someone she thought long dead was alive and Taryn knew she had to find her, help her if necessary. Though she didn't necessarily agree with how the Brotherhood dealt with things, she'd made a few friends here and being told they had a resident fortune teller gave her some hope that she could finally meet the sister she never knew she had.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped in. An older woman sat at a small table holding a deck of cards. As Taryn stepped closer, the fortune teller turned and with a soft smile gave her a 'Hello' in greeting. Taryn smiled and fumbled a reply. 'Hi, I'm Taryn. I need a bit of help and I don't usually do this kind of thing. I want to know if you can help me find my sister'. She took to the seat opposite the woman and focused on the details of the cards held in the teller's hands instead of on her. 'I am far too nervous for this' Taryn thought to herself.

As Corin ordered his whiskey and Taryn's Manhattan from someone who actually works at the casino, she took the time to notice him in detail. He seemed quite a bit taller than herself, yet certainly not the tallest of guys. He was slender too, though his build was largely hidden by the fancy suit he was clothed in. He certainly looked the part for this kind of lifestyle, seeming filled with confidence. Though you would be too if you knew that every bet you placed would win.
Corin soon turned in his chair and directed his attention more directly to Taryn. He began explaining the game to her and placing chips on the number eighteen. He told her it was a game of luck, though they both knew that luck had nothing to do with it in this cicumstance. She acknowledged what he was saying with a slight not and a smile, making sure he knew she was paying attention. By now Taryn had noticed that the other woman had stopped trying to attach herself to the man, which certainly helped her greater aim.
The waitress quickly arrived with their drinks and Corin paid for them, likely with some of the money he'd won at the Blackjack table earlier in the evening. He rose his drink and Taryn joined him. 'Cheers' they both announced with shared amounts of vigour. 'Would you care to place my bet?' asked Corin as the man in charge of the game called no more bets. This confused Taryn slightly, but she moved the chips he passed to her onto the board anyway. She noticed him subtly flick his wrist as the ball was spinning on the wheel, and thought to herself that must be his way of using his power. She gave a knowing smile and said 'So it's all a game of luck then, even for you Corin?'. She was half tempted to arrest the momentum of the ball just to throw him off, but thought better of it.

Taryn sat herself next to Corin in the seat he had gestured she take. This was a good start. He could very easily have told her to get out of his face and she'd be left to find another way to meet more mutants like her. 'I'll have another Manhattan, please. Gonna get it from a real waitress this time?' He didn't need to know that it'll be her third of the night but she can hold her drink she'll be fine. Even though she'd seen pictures of the man before, seeing him up close and in the flesh certainly made a difference. His eyes were far more piercing and his face looked softer than the photos had lead her to believe.
She knew that it would appear suspicious in immediately coming out with the fact she had no idea how to play roulette, though to be honest roulette was one of the few games she did actually have a bit of an idea about it. Not that she had ever played herself, but it seemed a pretty simple game and after being in a casino for a week and a half constantly you do pick these things up. She'd seen alot of people lose alot of money on this game. Corin obviously was not one of these people, however, given what he can do.
His power. The reason she's actually here. Probability manipulation sounds like alot of fun, probably moreso than her own power to oppose things. Taryn really wanted to get to the topic of mutants as soon as possible, but with that older woman still clinging to his other side that would be difficult. She needed to leave soon. Perhaps if she holds Corin's interest for long enough the other woman would get bored and leave them to their peace. At least with the amount of waitresses in the vicinity they wouldn't be waiting long for their drinks. That she was not paying for. Because she has skills.

This was it, Taryn Cain had finally found the man that would lead her to more people like her; people with abilities - 'mutants'. Everything she's done in the last few weeks had lead to this moment. Coming back to Chicago under the pretense of seeing friends, finding out as much as possible about this 'Corin Danvers' and the group of people known as the 'Brotherhood', learning where he'd be likely to go in Chicago, and coming here every night for the last week and a half. All of this had lead to her finally finding this man and hopefully her route to discovering more people like her. After half an hour of looking around the casino, she spotted the young man with his mousy brown hair and bright blue eyes standing by a roulette table.
He had obviously been using his abilities to improve his chances of winning because he appeared to have a rather substantial amount of chips in front of him. Either that or they were owned by the middle-aged woman who was attempting to get her drunk claws into him, but given the circumstances and what she knew of Corin's own abilities that seemed highly unlikely. Feeling like saving him from this woman who was obviously bothering would be a good way in, Taryn finished her cocktail at the bar and started to move towards the roulette table the dysfunctional pair were occupying.
As she approached, the young man looked up at her and gestured for her to come over. At first confused, Taryn quickly remembered that she was in fact wearing clothes that could easily see her mistaken for one of the casino's waitresses. A deliberate choice, given that being in the same casino every day for over a week would be a little suspicious given that she doesn't gamble and if any of the regulars continuously noticed her it would be better for them to think she was a waitress. Corin, however would not have seen her before, and so Taryn saw this as an opportunity to get a conversation going that wasn't about his latest drink order.
'Hi, I'm Taryn and I won't be your waitress today because I don't actually work here, but I'll be happy to get some drinks with you if you explain this game to me and what makes you just so good at it.' She may be exuding some sass with her opening remark, but she's learnt how to open conversations with guys, especially ones that she needs to get some information out of.

Character Basics
.:Name of Character:. Taryn Cain .:Species:. Mutant .:Alias:. Contra .:Year Born:. 1942 .:Affiliation:. Unaligned
Appearance
.:Physical Appearance:. Taryn is not the tallest of women standing only at 5’4”, with light brown hair and blue eyes. Her style varies from time to time, but in her earlier years she mostly wears bright colours and opts more for comfort over style. Her hair is just like all the other girls her age in the 60s – big and full of life, rarely to be seen tied back. As she grows older her style changes, playing all sides and her decision not to choose an affiliation makes for a more hardened personality over time. The bright colours, comfort and big hair are left behind much like the days of her youth, and are replaced in favour of a far more monochrome colour scheme, tighter fitting clothes and her hair remaining tied up to remind her she’ll never be the girl she used to be, regardless of how she looks. .:Height:. 5’4” .:Portrayed by:. Claire Foy
Personality
.:Personality:. In her youth, Taryn is an outwardly bright and bubbly girl, displaying obvious intelligence and resourcefulness with her girlish looks and charm. She gets along well with others and is always there when a personal conflict needs to be resolved. Behind this though, she is hiding a troubled recent past. After an accident that took the life of her parents and saw her taken in by her wealthy English relatives, her life took a turn for the worse. Getting away from her new family has allowed Taryn to feel more free and given her new desires about the world before her and the power she has manifested. She is learning to control what she’s already been able to do with her newfound ability, and pushes herself to see just how far her ability to oppose things can go, despite constant fears that there may be another accident like the one that took her parents away from her.
As she gets older and her power continues to develop and she learns to control any emotional outbursts that may cause further harm. Now more detached from personal relationships, the young girl she once was is gone, replaced with a much harder outer shell. Cold, calm and strict about the usage and dangers of mutant abilities, Taryn has learnt that her powers and those of others may not necessarily be something that should be accessible. She sees the conflict between Humans and Mutants as futile, and refuses to choose sides now because she believes that neither side will win. She has the power to oppose that which has an opposite force, yet finds herself standing in the middle ground, opposing no-one and everyone.
.:Powers/Abilities:. Taryn’s abilities lie within opposing that which has a logical opposition e.g fire with water, darkness with light, death with life etc. With what would seem like such a broad scope of power, there come many limitations. Firstly, the physical aspects of thing cannot be altered. Taryn could not simply turn fire into water to counter it, but would instead bring forth water from the universe to cancel it out. As with many non-physical powers, the larger the thing to be opposed, the more energy it would require. For example, bringing forth water to tackle a small fire would be simple, but doing the same to instantly tackle a forest fire would weaken Taryn greatly. Given her ability to oppose things, Taryn also has the ability to protect herself from any physical harm by countering what would hit her with equal and opposite forces to stop the motion of what would hurt her. This obviously can only be used when she is aware of the incoming harm however, accidents and sneak attacks will still easily affect her. In the case of prolonged harm, Taryn must concentrate the entire time the harm would come to her, and any break would cause her to still get hit, meaning she may not be able to compose herself enough to recover her cancellation.
Taryn also has the ability to suppress other mutant’s powers to a certain extent. Firstly, this can only apply to those whose power is not a permanent physical alteration. Beast, Deadpool and Wolverine’s powers could not be suppressed for example, but physical powers that require activation, such as those of Colossus or Darwin could be. For any other power, Taryn must know the full extent and details of the ability. If she were to attempt to suppress Jean Grey’s powers for example, it wouldn’t be enough to know that she had psychic powers. She would have to be aware that Jean is Telekinetic with a small amount of Telepathic ability, aswell as being aware of the Phoenix’s potential buried within. Similar to this, Taryn also has the potential to suppress peoples thoughts that can be opposed, such as those of violence with peace. This part of her power has always been very difficult to access though, and is almost impossible to use when she is in her youth. It’s only in later life that she discovers this ability, and even then it’s very difficult to control and use effectively.
History
.:Birthplace:. Aurora, IL, USA .:Family:. Cpl William & Esther Cain (Parents) (Deceased – 1957) Annabelle Cain (Sister) (Missing – Presumed dead) Jeremy & Wilhelmina Cain (Aunt & Uncle) Genevieve Cain (Cousin)
.:Occupation:. Waitress/Mercenary .:Current Location of Residence:. England .:History:. Taryn’s childhood was one of happiness. Her parents William and Esther were loving and thoughtful, and though born at the height of the second world war, with her father often away and her mother working in one of the many factories in Aurora, Illinois, she was always cared for very well. William had come to America from England several years before after deciding to leave his wealthy family for a new adventure, where he had met Esther working as a waitress and eventually made her his wife. His family back home were not happy that he had chosen someone of her stature as his wife, but he refused to allow them to influence him. As Taryn grew older, the war ended and her father came home safe, life became very comfortable and settled. For many years they were the epitome of a happy family. Then, Taryn hit her teens, and started displaying strange abilities when her emotions were heightened. She tried her best to them of course, through fear of ridicule. When her parents asked her if she was having problems with some of the children at school, she began to feel a swell of emotion like she had never felt before. She’d bottled up her thoughts, her fears, and inevitably, her power. All this rushed out in a flood of power and emotion, and with no understanding or control of her power, she stood and watched helpless as she simply opposed her own parents life. They fell, lifeless before her, and from that moment her life was up in the air.
Months after the incident, she now resided with her father’s brother and his wife and daughter in Coventry, England. Now knowing that keeping her power and emotions bottled up could be catastrophic she began learning to control what she could – still in secret and away from others. The family had never approved of William’s marriage, and as such treated Taryn like she was somehow dirty and not a desirable part of their life. Though she often attempted to get along with Genevieve who is only a year younger, her attempts were met with spite and discord. Beginning to feel unwanted, Taryn began seeing her powers as a way of escaping. She found a small unused library in the Manor owned by her aunt and uncle where she could learn to control her emotions and her power. In this library she discovered a photo album of her father when he was younger. Towards the end of the album, there were photos of a little girl, who Taryn assumed to be her, but soon realised her father was far too young in the photos for it to be her. Upon realising this, she quizzed her Aunt about the little girl. She was told that the girl was her father’s first daughter, Annabelle. Her mother had died giving birth, and her father looked after her. Shortly after the photos had been taken, Annabelle disappeared while on holiday, and despite searching for many months, she had never been found. The police officially reported her as missing, but informed the family she was likely no longer alive. Taryn’s aunt told her that that was the reason William had left England to begin a new life.
After this new revelation and several years of torment and shutting herself away, Taryn decided at the age of 18 that she would leave her aunt and uncle’s charge and find her own way. She left shortly after her birthday, and travelled north, first to London and then eventually she would leave London for Manchester. Arriving in London with the money her parents had left her and some she had saved herself, she found a small flat and a job at a local café, ready to experience the big city life and find others like her. She figured she couldn’t be the only person that was different in the way she was and tried her best to seek out others, not to align with, purely just to know she wasn’t alone.
Sample Post Waiting tables in a small London café didn’t really sound like the best life, and it was definitely a step down for Taryn Cain from life at her Aunt and Uncle’s manor, but for her, it was freedom and that was good enough. For so long she’d wished herself away from that place, from those people, and now she’d finally done it. She thinks about how her life had gone downhill since her parent’s death. About how her new family had seen her as undesirable, about the sister she never knew she had and will never know, and about the three little boys today had thought it was fascinating that she had an American accent. That’s the thing, she can think about all this and still be happy, still see the positive, because she’s free now. She can do whatever she wants, she can be herself, and she can find others like her.
Her powers had always been something she had feared a little bit, especially since her outburst that caused her parents’ death. But she knows that if she kept that fear and her powers bottled up again, the same thing could happen. So instead of shutting them away, she learns to control them whenever an opportunity arises. And if that means she intentionally drops a plate every now and again so she can counter the force of the fall before it smashes on the ground, then who needs to know. That’s her thing, she can oppose whatever she likes as long as there is a logical counter to it. Sometimes she’ll push a boundary, find out just how far she can go with it. Can she oppose darkness with light? Yes. Can she oppose fire with water? Yes. Can she oppose people she doesn’t like hitting on her by hitting them? Yes – but that’s just by using her hands (and occasionally feet).
