I'll be the one, if you want me toMagda knew better then to think of what ifs, and maybes. What was, was. One could go mad thinking of all the ways things could be different. Some might think there was an uncountable range of worlds and possibles. That every choice we made branched into another alternate reality where things were different, but she knew better. There was only this world. There was only now. Regret wasn't something she believed in . . . until now. The world was changing. It was growing more and more dangerous for mutants, and Magda knew where this would lead. She'd seen it in her childhood. She'd seen the fear that controlled hate, and hate turn to people doing unspeakable things because they believed it would make things better. No one learned anything it seemed. It made her role even more important. Magda ran a tea shop, but the back room was a safe place for mutants who needed to lay low for a while. She'd done it for years now, and had connections both to a school in America who took in the young, and to . . . . and to an island that was ran by her former lover, Erik Lehnsherr. Erik, or Magneto as he was called now, had found her in this shop years ago, and made sure she could reach out if needed. Over the years he would drop by if he was in the area but it quickly became apparent that it wasn't a very wise thing to do. Their feelings for each other were strong, but they were meant to be. Once they were, perhaps, but that was many years ago. They had met as children, and once again as young adults. They'd fallen in love and then Magda had walked away not wanting to see the man she loved so much die for a man he wanted to kill. Years later they met up once again only this time it seemed something beside his mission was standing in the way. Magda had been lonely over the years and met someone she thought she loved. For a while it had been really great, but then he began wanting her to be more like his family . . . less like her's. He wanted her to dress up and attend dinners. The more his job did well the less he wanted to be the carefree man he had been, and the more he wanted to be . . . formal. Official. Powerful. One of the turning points at been when he began working for the government and wanting mutants to be registered. Magda had wanted to leave him, but staying gave her access to so much information. She knew where they government buildings were, when raids would happen, and if someone was being targeted. This information she always gave to one man. The man that gave her her first, and only regret. Which brought them to now. Magda pulled the hidden door shut and walked toward the bed. There had been a fight at a government testing site, and Erik had been injured and lost consciousness. They'd gotten him here, but had to go and make sure others were safe. He was in the small one person bed wearing his pants, but his shirt had been cut away and an unjury on his ribs bandaged up. Magda sat on the edge of the bed and reached her hand out to brush his hair back. Since he wasn't awake she felt safe, just for this moment, to touch him like she had wanted to for years. "I still love you, you know," Magda whispered.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Magneto felt that tug, pulling him back to consciousness. He could hear and feel before he opened his eyes to reveal as much and . . . perhaps he should have done so sooner. Or perhaps he was meant to hear her words. Either way, it was not easy to hear. While deep down, he had always known it . . . just in the same way he always loved her, hearing it, was entirely different. Hearing it, when he was not meant to. Their interactions had been fairly casual recently. She would give him information to help protect mutants while being married to a man to tried to violate their rights. He could only imagine the conflict . . . but, Magda was doing the right thing.
She had lived through the horrors of persecution, so she understood. But it was why whenever they went on a mission that was tipped off by Magda, Magneto gave explicit instructions that they were not to kill anyone. He did not want that on her conscious, even if she was not responsible for their deaths. She was a good woman, the kindest he knew and he would not do anything to burden her conscious and good nature. Still. Some missions became more . . . violent and dangerous than others. This was one such example. They had raided a government testing site, but they were prepared for mutants. No. They were prepared for him. The use of metal minimum. The injections they weaponized to neutralize their powers. Yes. Erik knew what his next task was going to be and it was to destroy all trace of this substance and find a way to reverse its existence.
But, one thing at a time. As he slowly awoke, his mind raced to piece back together what had happened. The weapon had been used on him, but it was only temporary. one shot hadn't been enough so instead, they had aimed for sedatives . . . not before one of them managed to strike him in the chest which, now that he was conscious . . . he could feel the throbbing of. But still. All of this was secondary. Her words were what rung clear in his mind. And so, he slowly opened his eyes, looking at her. He didn't need to question whether he was safe.
She was here, which gave him that instant solace. That instant assurance, that he was indeed safe. That much had not changed since the first time he'd seen her at the camps. Even though circumstance was drastically different and their lives had been pulled apart . . . only to come together now. He looked at her, a knowing look in his eyes as if to indicate he heard her, without voicing it so to save her any . . . embarrassment. If that was even the right word to use.
He wanted to say it back. He wanted to tell her he loved her too, but no good would come of it. She was married, and he'd always wanted that happiness for her. Her words with her touch was always comforting, but he knew he could not bask in it for long. Looking at her, his vision cleared as he attempted to sit up rather than selfishly bask in the serenity she always provided him with. The gesture caused his expression so ever so slightly twist in the strain of his ribs, but he still managed to sit up, even if it was just barley. "The others?" He asked, needing to know that they were safe. If he was here alone . . . it meant that others had been in danger and that the Brotherhood members had went to save their own.

I'll be the one, if you want me toThe feeling of safety came to jerking stand when Erik opened his eyes. Her hand drew back, as her lips parted in surprise--he'd been awake. Erik had heard her love struck confession, and now he was staring at her. Pushing to a stand she moved to get him some water so she'd both busy her hands and not have to look at him.
He asked about the others, and she turned to see him sitting up. He was ignoring her words, and Magda didn't know if that was worse or better. She opened her lips once more to speak, but paused to take a deep calming breath before she could. The unease of him hearing her mortifying confession was thick. "Safe," she said in Polish, a language not many spoke in this area. "Selene got you here and then went to keep the others moving. She said it was safer." There, that came out in a steady voice, though hushed. Not because she needed to be hushed right now but because her breath hadn't fully came back since his eyes opened.
He'd heard her.
"You're injured. You should lay back and rest. I can give you a tea to ease the pain." She shied, moving closer to give him a glass of water and looking at his bandage. Judging by the area his bandage was in, she knew it had to hurt to sit up. It would keep him down long, but why overly hinder himself if he didn't need too?

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Safe. That was exactly what he needed to hear. He felt a wave of relief wash over him, one that continued to spread as Magda went on to explain that Selene brought him here and went to get the others. It was the best course of action, and why he trusted the telepath emphatically. He took the glass of water, thanking her as he took a couple of sips.
"I'm fine," he told her upon her offer of tea, trying to sit up a bit more though he could not yet bring his feet over to the edge of the bed. He had no intention of staying here longer than need be. Though her words continued to play in his mind. Knowing it, assuming it, longing for it . . . and hearing it, were all very different things. Letting his mind process that and the current circumstance of his injury and the others, he continued to drink more of the water until there was none left.
"Can I please have my shirt?" Another step to getting ready and leaving before there was any suspicion from her husband that he was here. He didn't know their marital situation, and knew Magda enough to know she would not have brought him here if there was a risk of discovery . . . but still. He never wanted to jeapordize her position by overstaying. "Unless there's nothing left of it?" He both asked and stated, in an almost joke and attempt to lighten the somewhat awkward air between them.

I'll be the one, if you want me toMagda knew he'd tell her that he was fine, but she also knew that she would make it any way. There was a small kettle in the back room for mutants staying here, and Magda went to pour water in it and set it on a small portable heater that would take longer to heat the water, but he needed something to help him ease the pain. When she turned back to him, he was stubbornly asking for his shirt, clearly thinking about leaving.
Had her words made him want to go? Was he about to risk himself because he didn't want to hear them? She picked up a new shirt, and walked it over to him. Only before he reached for it she put it beside the bed--her own stubbornness making her change her mind. Reaching out she put her hands on his shoulder and pushed him back to lay on the bed. She knew he had to half let her or he was in too much pain to fight her, since he went down without too much effort on her part. "Erik, people know your face. You can't just walk out there right now." She told him, it not quite being a lie. His face wasn't so easily known in this part that he couldn't get away with a hat and sunglasses to cover who he was.
"You need rest. You need a few hours to fully heal before you go back to trying to save the world from it's self." He was safe here. She could protect him here.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik reached for the shirt that she was about to offer but when she set it to the side instead, he let out a small breath, knowing what that meant. He knew her well enough. And to add further certainty, she pushed back on his shoulders to encourage him to rest. He had to admit, it felt easier to lay down than sit up right now.
But easy was never the route he took. Still. He knew better than to argue with her -- which wasn't exactly something he enjoyed doing either. "I can't stay here," he told her. It wasn't even because of her necessarily, but her husband. Briefly meeting her for a quick conversation was far different than her keeping him here in hiding. "It's too risky," he added, his words making it clear that it was not the risk to himself that he was concerned about . . . but rather, the risk to her.

I'll be the one, if you want me toHe said he couldn't stay here, and that it was risky. She knew that him becoming the face of the mutant protection meant he was at greater risk at all times, but no one knew he was here. His friends had made sure of that when they brought him here. Magda trusted them to keep him safe, and they had trusted her to keep him safe. The room of hidden, and not even her husband knew about it. She wouldn't ever let him know it was here.
"You're safe," she told him again, not wanting him to worry about it. "Selene made sure no one saw them bring you here, and no one knows about this room other then you and your friends. She and I are the only ones who know you are here. So rest." She told him in her motherly tone, that suggested she should be listened too. She knew it didn't often work with his stubbornness--at least not int he past when the tone often got her in bed. Softer her spoke again, "You will need your strength later, Erik. Just rest for a while." While she could protect him. She knew he was in danger a lot of his life, and for these few stolen moments she could keep him safe. She wanted to keep him for a while--SAFE! SHe wanted to keep him safe for a while.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION She thought he meant he was worried about himself and his own safety. He was easily able to take care of himself . . . which, was a bit of a contradictory thought considering he had been impaired and wound up here on the bed. But perhaps he thought more of her husbands anger should he be discovered or her affiliation with him be known. Though she was right; he would need his strength and his abilities were directly linked with his physical condition. If he was weak, he would not be as effective. After pausing in silence for a few moments, he finally spoke. "It is not my safety I am concerned about." He turned his head a little so that he could look at her, also knowing he had to address her earlier words. For it remained to be the elephant in the room, and he wasn't entirely sure he could actually rest until they had that . . . inevitable conversation.
One that perhaps had festered and grown over the past few meetings they had. "Because I know why you do it." Expressing his knowledge of it, his words having a deeper impact, indicating her revelation when she assumed he was still unconscious and unable to hear. He doubted the words would have been uttered otherwise. "Just as I know . . . " She still loved him. As she had said, and yes. He knew that. But hearing it . . . threatened to open those emotions he had thought dormant. Despite it and the different paths their lives had taken in terms of relationships . . . he still knew they had to have this conversation. For it might be the last if things grew more complicated than they already were. "And perhaps you shouldn't." Love him. He turned his head away to look at the ceiling. "Just as you should not be taking this risk." Of keeping him here.

I'll be the one, if you want me toMagda heard him speak words she should have known that he would have said. "It is not my safety I am concerned about." Looking at him, she said nothing as they stared at each other. "Because I know why you do it." She wasn't sure if he meant because of him or because she believed in the cause, but she knew that the answer was both. They were all Erik in a way. Everyone she helped. "Just as I know . . . " She looked down, unable to hold his glaze while he spoke of the words she said when she had thought he was sleeping. "And perhaps you shouldn't." If she could stop, then she would, but loving he wasn't a choice. It was something that happened more and more every time she thought of him. It was something that distracted her while working in the tea shop, and kept her quite at the dinner table while Matteo talked about work.
Her marriage had started falling apart for reasons that had nothing to do with Erik--but he was the reason she stayed. Him and the other mutants she could help with her information that she would give him. "Just as you should not be taking this risk." This risk. The risk for him. Magda who by nature was a loving and touching person couldn't look at him as she spoke back to him. "It's not that simple, Erik." She would love him either way, and she'd take the risk either way. The political world was a mess. She would do what she could to help that. And as for him, "Either way, you're safer here then out there." Finally looking over at him, "So rest. Nothing will happen to be because you're here." Matteo wouldn't let the embarrassment of a wife helping the ones he was trying to stop become public. She wasn't sure what would happen if he found out but it wouldn't be public. He'd keep that lid on tight. Public imagine was important to his cause. "Let me do this for you." Help him, since she couldn't shouldn't love him.
