These boots were made for walkingMagda was upset. Angry. displeased. Livid! She was fine with mutants! She loved his powers! She was loving being the mother of a daughter with powers! She even was understanding that Erik and Nina had this wonderful connection that she wouldn't have as they bonded over her powers! She understood!
What she didn't understand was this! Magda picked up her phone and sent a text to her husband. 'You took her to the zoo today?' WITHOUT HER! It had to be impulsive choice! They had been going to the city so Erik could buy some things needed for the house, and Magda had wanted to visit a neighbor who was sick in the hospital. While int he city apparently they had found their way into the zoo! Nina was walking around in a state of euphoria talking to all the animals about amazing things while Magda was sitting by a sick bed listening to someone complain about gout. Yes, she was upset.
and one of these days . . .

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik had never seen Nina so excited. She was surrounded by friends, those she could communicate, and Erik absolutely loved seeing his daughter's powers bring her such joy. The trip to the zoo had been unplanned. They went into the city to pick up some things, and one sign had sealed the deal. It only took Nina asking a couple of times for him to give in. Which, wasn't uncommon. He would quite literally do anything for his daughter and nearly found it impossible to say no. A trait that would be dangerous when she got older especially. But, he never thought anything bad or negative of it. So a few errands, had turned into a trip to the zoo.
Exploring the different kinds of animals, having lunch, treats and just . . . spending the day together in this way. Hearing her talk and talk about what the animals were thinking, and the way they naturally came to her -- which pleasantly surprised the workers, saying how much they loved her. It filled Erik with pride, knowing his daughter naturally drew others to her, powers or no powers. They had seen most of it, when Erik got a call from his work. There was apparently an emergency at their work site and they needed help cleaning it up. Nina seemed content to leave, though perhaps it was due to Erik's promise that they would come back. Since he hadn't heard from Magda, he let her know that he would be dropping Nina at the friend's house she was visiting, and return later to get them both.
Stopping by, and saying a quick hello to the unwell friend, Erik told Magda he would just be a little while before picking him up. Once he got to the site, that was when he received the text. He knew his wife well enough to know she was . . . displeased. Her tone. The way she said it. And, the fact that he knew she would have wanted to be there. Nina's first trip to the zoo. He looked at his phone, his mind already working with how he would need to make this up to her. Moments like this, proved Magda right whenever she said that Nina had him wrapped around her finger. It was unplanned, and she really wanted to go, he quickly tried to justify. But I promised her we would go again. And the next time, he wouldn't go without Magda. He doubted he would be able to get out of her displeasure over two missed trips compared to this one.

These boots were made for walkingMagda didn't reply to his text. For one, he was working and she wanted him safe not thinking about anything they might say to each other, and for another--she wasn't fond of talking this way. It was so hard to say anything important in this impersonal manner. Besides it was rude to ignore their friend who was telling her about how the operation on her hip went, along with how she was going to try to cure her other ailments without any of that 'pesky doctor's medicine'. Nina was bouncing all around and save Magda from that conversation by telling their elderly neighbor all about the zoo animals and how much she loved looking at them.
Yes. No more texting Erik. Therefore, she said nothing until Erik came back to pick them up. Hearing his truck pull up, Magda bid her farewells, and then picking Nina up, Magda carried her out to the truck. Nina was so excited, and Magda knew she hadn't talked about her powers yet because she knew she shouldn't talk about them around others. Magda knew the moment they got into the truck that Nina would begin filling her in on so much more! Walking out it was growing dusk as she approached the truck, daughter in her arms. "Erik," she greeted in a tone she only early used. "Everything alright at work?" She asked, meaning these words. She did honestly hope no one was hurt.
and one of these days . . .

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik knew he was in trouble when Magda didn't reply. She wasn't ignoring but he knew her well enough to be very aware of the fact that she was not about to have this conversation via text. Which meant . . . they were going to have it at home. He was practically bracing himself for it, but also would simply prepare himself. Do a little, preemptive apologizing. Trying to focus on the task at hand, he aided a few of his coworkers so that they could fix the broken machine. The irony of it all. Because with one wave of his hand, he could have it working in even better condition than before.
But he couldn't even subtly do such a thing. It was too great a risk. Still. He was recognized for his great understand of metal and yet, they didn't even know the extent of it. Once it was fixed, he texted Magda to let her know he was on his way. But, not without making a quick stop at the flower store, making a bouquet of her favourite type of flowers. Then . . . he went to pick up his wife and daughter. When he saw them, he could see by her expression tone of voice. Getting out of his vehicle, he held out the flowers for her, kissing her on the cheek despite her . . . frustration at him. "Everything was fine," he assured her. "One of the machines was broken." After kissing Nina as well, they all got situated in the car so that they could go home.

These boots were made for walkingThe flowers were a nice touch, and she did love them--but she was still so angry. Hurt. She wanted these memories. She wanted to be apart of this! She knew she was only human but she wanted to experience these things just as much as he did. She wanted to see the glee in Nina's face while she experianced these things too. Erik kissed her and told her that everything was alright at work. Good! She didn't like the idea of someone hurt.
Magda got Nina in the car, and in a car seat (which was made with a metal base, which wasn't the safest any more but if Erik was driving then Nina was more safer in it then a plastic one). Afterward Magda climbed into the car with the flowers. She sat them in her lap and pulled on her safety belt. 'Mama, can I tell you more now?' Nina asked, and Magda knew she meant about her powers. Magda looked over at Erik as she replied. "Sure, baby," Nina then launched into a story and was so full of excitement and glee that Magda just felt angrier because of it. '..and ALL of the giraffes came over to kiss me! THey have blue tongues! Did you know that Mama?" No. No she'd not known that. "No, I've never seen one up close. Much less kiss a little girl." 'THe zoo keeper said that they never gave kisses! I was so special!'
Magda stared at Erik the whole time.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik knew he was in trouble. The moment Nina went on about the zoo, this time in what Erik presumed was more detail since it was only them in the car . . . he could feel Magda's eyes on him. He didn't dare return the gaze. Though he occasionally looked from his peripheral vision and could see Magda's look of . . . displeasure. At least looking in the review mirror he saw Nina's excitement while she spoke . . . but each story she told, he could feel his wife's expression piercing deeper into him.
After a while, he finally spoke. "Nina, love, you must be tired." Not that he ever wanted to silence his daughter but . . . she had a long day and . . . Magda was clearly not happy as the conversation pressed on. "Why don't we listen to some music to help get some rest." Something soothing, he thought, as he put on the radio. Anything to fill the silence and keep from each amazing story. While he loved hearing it -- despite having experienced it -- he knew it was only putting him deeper and deeper in trouble with his beloved wife.

These boots were made for walkingErik told Nina that she must be tired, and Magda knew he was trying to keep this was going further. 'I don't want to sleep! I want to tell Mama about how the butterflies landed on me and told me about their favorite foods! Mama can we leave out some old fruit in the mornings? Not at night. They said the bats will try to eat them, but in the mornings. They'd like that.' Butterflies landed on her?! Magda watched Erik in the darkening truck as they drove closer to their house.
Butterflies. Kisses. Magda's grip on the flowers tightened as she felt left out and hurt. Angry that she hadn't gotten a chance to go too. She stared at Erik, while she spoke to Nina. "Sure, baby. We'll find something in the morning and leave it somewhere safe." Nina smiled and looked out the window then, but not Magda. She stared at her husband the while way home.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik continued to feel Magda's eyes on him for the entire ride home as Nina continued to tell stories about the zoo. With each one, he felt as if Magda's gaze was piercing deeper and deeper into him. Though eventually, Nina's energy and enthusiasm started to wane. Not due to lacking excitement but rather, the tiredness that was starting to take over. And when she drifted to sleep, silence filled the car instead. By the time they got home, she was fast asleep. Erik got out and carefully picked Nina up, carrying her inside and getting her ready for bedtime.
He also knew that perhaps he was stalling, ever so slightly because he knew that he and Magda were going to have that conversation. Once Nina was tucked in bed, comfortable and asleep, Erik made his way down stairs to see Magda in the kitchen, cleaning a few things up. He didn't even ask if she needed help as he took hold of a towel and started to dry the dishes. He wasn't even sure how to casually start the conversation, considering anything he asked about her day or gout, would only serve as a reminder of them going to the zoo. Not that she was likely to forget it. "I can finish up in here," he offered, looking at her to try and get a sense of how she would react . . . and whether the conversation was going to be an inevitable one.

These boots were made for walkingMagda did stare at him the whole way home. It wasn't often that she got upset since most things they agreed on so magikally that they only really got upset FOR each other, not from each other. They also loved and respected each other enough that anything they did that might hurt the other was unintentional and not meaning too. Which was one reason this hurt. It had been unexpected and she felt left out.
Nina and Erik had such a special bond, and Magda knew that the mutantcy was special to him. She knew he had spent the first half of his life thinking he was the only one and now he had a daughter to share it with. What she didn't like was being left out. Not getting to experience such a wonderful things and only hearing about it afterwards! She loved that Nina had this powers! She'd always seen them as magik in Erik, and in Nina. They were wonderful and amazing!
Erik walking into the kitchen and began drying the dishes. Magda put up a few of the others and the door to the cupboard shut a little harder then she planned it too. The drawer she pulled out moved faster then she planned it too, and bounced slightly when it shut just as quickly. Turning to put her hip against the saunter she didn't take him up on his offer to help, and instead spoke in German since it was what Nina didn't speak. "I need to say something, and I need you to listen." Magda waited for him to put the dishes down and give her his full attention before she went on.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Hearing her reaction, had Erik put away another cup, before setting the cloth down, turning around so that his back was against the counter, hands by his side, and looking at her. He gave a slow nod of his head, indicating that he was ready to listen, and would not say a word in between to interrupt. They didn't have arguments often. And disagreements were natural and eve healthy for two people in a relationship.
He knew she was hurt but he also knew that listening to the details of it was incredibly important. Perhaps he couldn't take it back, but he would at least know how to make it better. But talking, communication . . . well, even Erik knew the full importance of that. So the least he could do was give his wife his undivided attention and do as she requested: just listen.

These boots were made for walkingErik turned to face her, resting his back on the counter, and gave her his attention. She knew the nod wasn't permission but agreement to her request. They didn't have a power struggle in their relationship. They weren't' like that. They were a team, and had so much respect for each other.
So she spoke in German, and explained why she was angry right now. "You took her to the zoo." Which should have been a fun thing to talk about, and had their daughter not had these powers then maybe it would have just been normal. "I know you and Nina had this . . . " She didn't know all the German words, which made her struggle slightly, "Bond that I can't understand because of your powers. I know you like to help her learn to use them but . . . . Erik, I would have wanted to be there! I would have wanted to see her face light up and . . . . kiss the animals! I want to be apart of these things." She wanted to see Nina so excited and happy! She wanted to hold Erik's hand while Nina counted ahead of them! She wanted to watch him hold her over the railing as she petted whatever wild animal she had befriended!
She didn't want to be left out. She didn't want to miss out on the small things that mattered so much.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik remained quiet as Magda spoke and explained her reasons for being hurt. He had never wanted to hurt her. It was never his intention and he knew that she was aware of that. But still. It didn't change the fact that he had done so. She spoke of their bond as a mutant and that she wanted to be a part of all these moments with her. With them. Her firsts. He remained silent; a thoughtful silence. He knew he should have thought more before taking her but . . . him being unable to say no to her was only part of the reason. The simplistic reasoning for it. After several moments of silence that followed her words, ensuring she was finish and ready for him to speak as he did not wish to interrupt . . . he spoke.
"We both know it is difficult for me to say no to Nina," he said with a bit of a smile, a light tease but he would not leave it at that. As she was honest with him, he would of course be honest with her in regards to what he had been thinking. "I never wanted any child of mine to live in a world where she had to hide her gifts." Their daughter's powers. He had fought for mutant rights -- albeit in a radical way -- for so many years of his life.
"And it, pains me that our daughter has to." Because of him. The unspoken words, but implied ones. Because of choices he had made, they were all in hiding now. "Hearing her ask to go to the zoo, knowing it is a place where she could . . . express herself through her abilities. No restraints. Just pure joy . . . I didn't even think twice." Part of it was deep seated guilt, for putting her in this position where she couldn't talk about her powers.
Especially as Erik's entire political standpoint and belief system had been one where mutants should not have to hide. Where they could be themselves. He took the risk of walking over to her, slowly taking her hand in his, aware that she might pull away. But he did so anyway, just as he look deeply into her eyes, sincerity in his gaze and tone of voice. "And I should have." Thought twice about it. "I'm sorry." He had no issue in admitting fault, especially to his wife when there was very little that hurt or upset her. A wife who had stood by him in all of this.

These boots were made for walkingShe knew he wanted to have his dream world, and she wanted that too. Not just for him and their daughter but for all the ones who had to hide because they were born different then the ones who held political power in this world. She understood that--but ti didn't make her feel any less left out. Maybe just less angry.
He walked toward her and took her hand, so Magda wrapped her fingers around his and squeezed. He apologized, and she knew that everything would be alright between them. She just wasn't ready to let it go without making another point. "What will you do when she grows too spoilt?" Magda teased, but her tone wasn't as amused as it normally was.
Because she had missed this. Because she wanted this for their daughter too. "Erik, you know I want these things for her too. That I don't want her to know the fear I did, or you did from your faith or your powers. I would have wanted to see her joy too." And she was sad that she missed it. That he had got to see Nina using them so openly and happy.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION Erik was relieved when she didn't pull from his touch. Instead, she curled her fingers around him. While he knew this was not enough to permanently damage their relationship . . . he was still relieved to know that they could hopefully resolve it tonight before going to bed. He gave a bit of a smile at her question. "It's a risk I'm willing to take," he said, and though her words were not exactly teasing . . . his were spoken on the lighter side.
"She and you are what are most precious to me in this entire world," he told her. "I doubt I can deny either of you of a great deal." The same teasing tone but, there was truth to it. Deciding to further the risk, he raised her hand joined with his to his lips, lightly kissing the back of it. He loved them both more than anything, and he wanted to only make them happy, especially with all they had sacrificed for him. Magda did not have to bare this life of hiding, but she had. She did. And he would never take that for granted. As she spoke of how she wanted those things for her, and did not want her to see the same persecution they both had suffered. That she had wanted to see her joy.
Only that . . . it was his own fault that Nina was put in this position. Not Magda's. But he knew better than to say that. An internal guilt that he carried with him. "I know," he said quietly. "I never intended to deny you of that." He hadn't thought deeply about it. Only that his daughter had asked for something, and his immediate reaction was agreement. "And I won't, ever again." He moved to take her free hand in his, looking softly at her. "I will make this up to you. I promise." He would find a way.

These boots were made for walkingMagda smiled when he joked about spoiling their daughter, then looked back at him and glared. As if to say How dare you make me smile while I am trying to argue with you. He even lifted her hand to kiss it, and she knew the argument was over. She had pointed out how he'd hurt her, and he'd apologize twice, and said he wouldn't do it again.
"Make it up too me?" She asked, her voice still not fully teasing but not as hurt either. "How do you plan to do that?" It was an invitation to kiss her, not a request for him to do anything more. That wasn't who they were. Magda and her husband had a open and loving relationship. She didn't expect a grand gesture from him to make it up to her. She expected him to be honest when he said he wouldn't do it again. That didn't mean she wasn't going to let him get away without sounding kissing her to seal his apology.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION He couldn't help but smile at her tease. How blessed he was to have earned the love of such a woman. He shifted closer to her, tilting his head to the side a little. He leaned closer to her, pausing just a mere inch before their lips would touch. "I can think of a way or two," he said softly in a low voice, letting the position linger for only a few moments until he closed the distance, kissing her.
One hand let go of hers and instead, wrapped around her waist to gently hold her against him. Yes, he had made quite the mistake tonight and had certainly learned from it. But being able to resolve it . . . being able to move forward, that was what mattered. Letting the embrace linger for the few wonderful moments it did, he slowly eased out of it, though remained quite close. "Is that good enough?" He asked in the same tone of voice he had used earlier. "Or do I have more making up to do?" His voice very clearly a tease, and just enjoying these moments of being together. Of being in love.

These boots were made for walkingHe whispered against her lips and she loved it, evident b her lips hitching up into a smile that she tried to fight. Oh how she loved this man. Faults and all. Then he kissed her and Magda's hands lifted to trail from his elbows to his shoulders were she held on to him during the kiss. The heel of his hand holding her close was warm and wonderful.
As he broke the kiss, he teased her about if this was enough to make up for it. Yes. Loving her was enough to let him forgive him anything. "It's a good start," Magda whispered back, as her hand moved to his cheek. "Don't let me stop you now." With that she kissed him again, her arms winding around his neck, and her lips parting to taste him.

Peace WAS NEVER AN OPTION He smiled through the kiss, breathing into it as he wrapped his other arm around her. While he knew nothing could happen in the kitchen, he was enjoying the embrace . . . feeling her body next to his. It had come far from the car ride to the house. Her encouragement as she deepened the kiss as well as her verbal one, telling him not to let her stop him.
His hand slid over her back, reaching down a little lower to touch her and run his hands over the curve of her behind. His lips parted from hers, moving along her cheek, towards her neck but stopped at her ear along the way. "Shall we go to bed?" He asked, or rather, suggested. It was either that, or a comment about working on another baby, on making one. He opted to go with the more direct question.

These boots were made for walkingMagda loved his kisses, and the feel of his hands on her body warmed her, as her breath slowly began to come faster--and it was in these moments that a small voice broke through their kiss. Magda pulled back from the kiss and turned her head to look at their daughter, as Nina was up again and asking her Papa to come sing her another song. Apparently she was awake and every time she tried to sleep the thoughts of the animals woke her up more.
Magda looked up at her husband, smiled at the karma that played out here, kissed his chin and slowly let him go. "It's a pity you cannot say no to her," Magda whispered, as she turned to walk up to bed, leaving father with Daughter. Magda went on to bed alone.
