WAS NEVER AN OPTION

If anyone had told Erik 10, 20 years ago that this would be his life . . . he would have thought it a joke. He would have been in disbelief. So at times, he would have to pause and think if this truly was his life. If he truly had found happiness. All it took was a single glance at his wife and daughter, and he knew the answer. The first little while had been difficult. Paranoia of being found, discovered so strong in his mind. But now, they had grown more comfortable. Connected more with the community around them. They were settled, as the Gurzsky family.

Erik -- or Henryk -- had found a job as a welder. The irony, being surrounded by so much metal. He could do with a wave of his hand, what took them hours or days to complete. But, it was his comfort . . . to be around so much metal. And a test of his self control. He no longer relied on his powers to function on a daily basis. He was able to complete the task manually, because that was the safest thing to do. When the day was over, he parted ways with his coworkers, exchanging the same casual conversation in parting. One of them insisting that his family come over for dinner next week with Magda and Nina. How odd it felt, to be so comfortable in a society where they did not know who he truly was. Odd, because it felt far too comfortable. Erik knew the second they would find out, everything would shift and friends would become foes. But hopefully, that would not happen. Magda and Nina seemed happy too, and that was mattered the most to him. That they were happy, and safe.

He made his way back to their home. It was simple but perfectly suited for them. Out in the rural land, which worked well for Nina considering her gift and the animals that surrounded them with whom she could keep company with. He parked his car, making his way inside as he did just like every other day. A routine; one would thing mundane considering his previous work . . . but he enjoyed it. More so the life it granted him, the happiness he found with his family. He was not naive enough to believe it would last forever, but was hopeful enough to believe it would last for this time to come. Which was why he was more relaxed, at ease, and in the comfort of his home . . . had his guard lowered.

Motherhood was wonderful! Magda and Nina had spent the afternoon at a play date with a neighbor, and their new baby. Magda missed Nina's baby stage, and found herself longing for a baby to be around once again. She missed hearing the baby laugh, and the feeling of being in awe f every breath they took--not that she wasn't in Awe of Nina, but she wanted a baby.

How how to convince her husband?

Magda heard Erik's truck and smiled as she finished folding Nina's clothes. Putting them in the drawer, and walked out to the main room and paused. Tip toeing out she walked softly up behind Erik. Magda was a playful person by nature, and Erik never seemed to find when she teased him or played a little. In fact he seemed to enjoy it. He had always been such a serious man, that she often took it upon herself to help him live life differently. Happier.

Getting just a few steps behind him Magda jumped toward him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders as she laughed. Erik worked so hard, and she knew he didn't have to work that hard. His magik could do that with ease. He did it for his family--which she hoped was about to grow!

Erik knew that he should be more aware of his surroundings, and he had been in the early stages of moving here. He had spent so much time on the run, that he had to be alert at all times. But now, their home was a safe haven. So he hadn't heard Magda sneak up behind him and when he felt those arms around him, his expression faltered for a moment in surprise, before his lips grew into a smile, one that touched every feature of his face, slowly turning around to properly greet his wife.

"One day, I will hear you coming," he teased her, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her in greeting. A sensation he never grew tired of. Just as he didn't mind the way she surprised him. A welcome gesture; a playful action. He basked in it all, enjoying the ease in which a smile came where he'd spent majority of his life void of such an expression. Easing out of the kiss he remained close to her, enjoying the contact and closeness of their bodies.

Magda laughed as he turned to tease her, and then kiss her! Life was the wonderful in these moments! She knew he was happy, and there wasn't much more that she could wish for!

Except for a baby!

It was on the tip of her tongue to ask now, and hint that a baby would help him hear her but she wanted to make sure he was ready too. So instead she lingered over the kiss, before asking, "Did you have a good day?" He had made friends, just as she had, and Magda liked that he was letting his guard down and living life! She knew his mission protecting mutants was important, but she wanted him to have more then that! Friends, family . . . with children. At least two of them!

His smile was unwavering as the kiss lingered and she asked him if he had a good day. "I did," he assured her. "But I'm sure the evening will be better." Because he would be spending it with his family. Work was mundane, but the moments he spent with his wife and daughter made it worth it.

"What did you and Nina do today?" He asked, enjoying hearing about how they spent their time. The quaint home and community certainly did seem like a good place to have a family. The solitude, away from the hustle and bustle of a big city . . . it was absolutely perfect for them. "Where is Nina anyway?" He asked, as she was not with her mother, though assuming the next best place to find her was out back, enjoying nature with all her friends.

He asked about Nina and Magda smiled, knowing he was a god father and always asked about his daughter. He loved her so much. Nina had to be the best thing to very happen to Erik. Family meant so much to them both. "Out side with her friends," Magda told her, knowing that Nina's powers were special and (she assumed) rare. Her daughter was using them for good things, and to bring happiness and Magda loved it!

"She is growing very independent." Which was one reason Magda felt it was time for another baby! "Do you remember when she was so small? She wanted you to carry her everywhere!" Magda smiled at the memory. "She had you wrapped around her little fingers. I thought you'd spoil her endlessly." Magda was teasing him, but there was some truth too it. Erik loved his daughter, and if she wanted to be held, he always held her. Nina loved him singing to her at night, so Erik sang too her. These weren't bad things. It was what made him a good father.

Erik loved hearing about the time she spent with her friends. She was learning to use her powers, but he did not want to force her to learn too quickly. She was still young and, she wasn't a mutant he was attempting to train. She was his daughter, and he wanted her to ease into her powers comfortably. Besides, they never posed a threat to her. It was actually rather reassuring, that when she had control of them, the animals she could communicate, would protect her if the need for it arose.

"Feels like it was just yesterday," he fondly thought of. When she was but a baby, and they were changing her diapers. When she said her first word. Took her first step. "She's growing up so fast," he said, both with pride and that realization that wouldn't forever remain his baby girl. At her next words, he playfully looked surprised by them. "Had?" He repeated with emphasis on the word. "I think she still does." Have him wrapped around her finger. "I don't think that will ever change," he added on, only half kidding. It just seemed impossible to ever say no to her. And even more impossible to stop spoiling her.

"Or at least I hope it doesn't change," he continued. He knew the time would come where he would obviously have to stop carrying her . . . but not spoiling her? Not giving in to what she wanted? No. He didn't see that ending any time soon. Which, perhaps wasn't the best thing, but as a father, how could he resist? "You're very reminiscent today," he teased. "Did something happen?" Had a certain memory entered her mind for any particular reason? Had Nina done something that had her mother thinking back to when she was much younger? There was a clear playfulness in his question, but also, a genuine curiosity.

Magda raised her eyes brows as he said that Nina still had him wrapped around his finger. "I think she does," Magda agreed with a knowing tone, and while she pretended seriousness, she was holding back a smile. Nina was her Pap's little girl and was very wrapped around him as well. Magda loved their relationship--she loved how excited Erik got when he found out about Nina's powers, she loved how he looked when he held baby Nina, and she loved hearing him sing to their daughter in a Polish lullaby. She loved his man. She loved that girl!

"No, nothing happened." She nothing out of the ordinary. "We went to see the new baby of Filip and Amelia. Nina held her, and it reminded me of when Nina was that little." And made her want a baby again! Magda hugged up closer to her husband, letting her body rest flush against his. "It made me think of how you used to sooth Nina when was teething while singing her a song. Of how little she was." Her tone slowly shifted from a 'I remember when' to some that suggested she was building up to something, a question of sorts. "And, it made me want to ask you something."

Surely by now he could see where this might go, but Magda hoped he'd at least play along. "I know Nina was a surprise for us, and we've not talked about building our family more but . . . How do you feel about more children?" Soon?

Erik listened to Magda explain that nothing had happened, but spoke of how she went to visit those who just had a new baby . . . thinking back on when Nina was one. He smiled fondly at the memories, recognizing how quickly Nina grew up for that time did not seem so long ago. He remained silent, waiting for her to finish, curiosity in him when she said she wanted to ask him something . . . and that something became abundantly clear.

His smile remained as he kept his arms around her, his expression still soft. "The last time you brought up the subject of children this way, you told me you were pregnant with Nina." A slight tease, for he still remembered that conversation as if it was yesterday. Asking him about whether they would be mutants and such. "Are you asking me because you already have something to tell me?" He asked with slight playfulness, but there was genuine curiosity in his question as well. Was she pregnant?

True! And it was easy to see why he might think that way, but Magda wasn't. Not yet! "No, not yet." She teased him, "but if you work at it tonight I could be." She knew that if they got pregnant by surprise that it would be wonderful, and Erik would love the baby but, she wanted to know this was what they both wanted.

Babies were hard, and she knew that his life wasn't as simple as her own. He was a mutant in a world that wasn't friendly toward them. Any child he had would be at risk too. While he knew that she would love them and care for them in everywhere a mother could--the rest of the world wouldn't. Which was why she was asking. "If that is something you want." Making this choice was something they needed to do together. Like all their choices. If he wanted to wait, she'd wait. A baby wasn't just about her.

Yet. That was the key word in what she had said. That she wasn't pregnant . . . yet. The rest was making it was come together. She wasn't bringing up the topic of children because she was expecting one. She was bringing it up, because she wanted another. His smiled remained as she teased a little, and then asked him if it was something he wanted. Or rather, brought up the subject. Truth was, Erik had not had any brothers or sisters growing up. He supposed in the grand scheme of things, it was for the best, as it would have only been one more loved person to mourn.

But his life now was different. They were here, settled, happy. It seemed like a wonderful place to raise children. Plural. More than one, as Nina was so very happy here too. "Nina would make a wonderful older sister," he said, his answer clear in his words. But just in case there was any doubt . . . "And you make a wonderful mother," he added with the utmost sincerity, leaning in to lightly kiss her lips. Easing out of the short embrace, he looked at her softly. "I would love to add to our family." It seemed like the perfect time for one; a new addition. A chance to expand their family while they could be happy here. While fate was to kind to them.

Magda smiled at his words and paused for a moment to take everything in! They were going to try to make a baby! Erik kissed her, and Magda tightened her arms around him to hold him into the kiss. When he pulled away Magda laughed softly at this words. "We are good parents." She corrected, "And you are a great husband."

Rising to her toes and dropping back she bounced twice, and her hands moved to rest on his chest. "We are going to have a baby!" Laughing Magda felt excited at the idea that they were growing their family and putting down roots. While her family never had roots in a place, they had it in family--now Magda had both! A place and more importantly a growing family with children and a husband. "I love you, Erik Lehnsherr," She whispered to him, knowing the only reason she had all this love, her daughter and this wonderful place was because of him.

She needed to feed him and she knew Erik would want to see Nina, but she also couldn't quite let him go yet. Reaching for his hand she held it.

He knew he excelled in some areas compared to others, but hearing her speak of how he was a good parent, a great husband . . . the words meant a lot to him. For both roles were the most important ones he had. The ones he most cherished. Once their lips parted and she spoke excitement over the idea of having another baby, the sentiment was shared.

The excitement was shared. "Only if I . . . how did you put it earlier?" He asked, playfully pretending to think. "Work at it." Repeating her words exactly and well, a hint of flirtation and clear suggestiveness in his words, just as she had said them. "And I love you," he reciprocated, guiding her hand that held his to his lips to lightly kiss it. "Come, let's see Nina." Their first but now established, that it would not be their last.

"If you work at it really hard," she corrected playfully, "Many times, and in many ways." Using her words to mimic his suggestive one. Magda smiled at him in a silent moment after he told her he loved her. She loved him, and this family! To know he wanted to build this family with her, made her world complete!

"You go see Nina, I'll make us something to eat." She told him, kissing his cheek before letting him go. "She is out back with her friends." Her friends that were animals. They had discovered she had the power to talk to animals, which Magda loved! While she would have loved Nina if she was blue and had a tail, she was grateful that Nina's powers were more subtle. Easier to hide around humans, and let her lead an easier life. "Ask her to wash up."

Erik let out a breath of amusement at her teasing words of working at it really hard . . . many times. "As many times as it takes," he teased, stealing another brief kiss before finally lowering his arms from her so that he could see Nina, giving a nod to Magda in response to her words. This was as close to perfection as Erik imagined his life ever had the possibility of being. Stepping out to the back he saw their daughter, with all her friends. He joined her, and though he could not communicate with animals like his daughter, did ask how her day was, and what she spoke about with them. It was a beautiful gift and Erik could not be more proud that his daughter was able to do such extraordinary things.

After talking to her for a bit, he told her to wash up so that they could eat dinner, going back into the house with her as she did what she was told. Erik rejoined Magda in the kitchen, staring to take out the plates to set the table. "Her powers are growing stronger every day," he said smiling with pride. It would be another amazing discovery, to find out what their second child would be able to do -- seeing as how their mutant powers were completely unrelated.

Magda smiled as the father walked out to talk to the daughter. She loved Erik and Nina's relationship. Loved how Erik valued everything Nina said, and didn't dismiss it because she was a child. She loved how he sang too her, no matter how tired he was. For a man who was wanted world wide for bad thing (and she knew he was innocent of most of it) he had this amazing soft place in his heart and life for his child. He'd given up everything for her to have a safe and happy life. Magda was proud he was the father of her daughter.

When Erik came in, Magda sat a plate on the table where he normally sat and smiled at him. "Is that normal for children? For their powers to grow as they do?" She asked, still finding this all more magikal then science. She loved that they could do such wonderful things! Still, it was all new to her and she was learning quickly.

After setting another plate down for Nina, Magda moved to get her plate and the drinks. She loved taking care of them this way, and had become a rather good cook over the years of trying everything she could. Every meal was always well flavored and full of great smells. "One day we will need another chair." She teased, in almost a whisper so Nina wouldn't hear.

Erik smiled at her question as they finished setting the table. "Yes," he confirmed. "As they get older, their powers manifest more and more. In the beginning, they struggle to control it but eventually, once they do, they are able to use them in incredible ways." His upbringing had been similar. Lacked control, to unlocking the key to his power. "Nina has a chance to learn the full potential of her powers in a comfortable, safe environment. It's all we can hope for." It was what mutants deserved. A peaceful upbringing. A chance to explore their powers without fear and oppression.

This was the environment they had created for Nina, and while he knew deep down, it may not last . . . he would do everything in his power to make sure it did. Grateful for the distraction of his thoughts, his smile grew when Magda mentioned an extra chair. To prepare for another baby . . . well, it truly filled Erik with joy. To be in a place where they could welcome another child into this world. "A chair. Clothes. We'll have everything we need," he said confidently, ensuring that his voice was also low so that Nina would not hear. They would have to tell her, but considering they just made this decision . . . perhaps it was best to ease her into it, and make the reveal once Magda was actually expecting.

She liked learning about Nina's powers as Nina did, and having Erik here to help them both learn and adjust was the more wonderful feeling of support. Magda knew if shew as doing this on her own, then it would be harder and she'd end up guessing at most of what was going on. With Erik here all the time there was this feeling of safety to all these unknowns--a feeling of adventure. It made her love him even more for this fatherly understanding he had--despite them both having lost their fathers very early on.

They would have everything they need. It was all they could hope for. Magda stood still for a moment, just smiling so bright and happy at him. "I think I just fell just a little bit more in love with you," she told him, not bothering to lower her voice on that. Nina knew all too well there was a risk of walking in on her parents kissing any any moment. Thankfully she liked pretending to be grossed out.
