Character Basics
.:Name of Character: Remy Etienne LeBeau .:Species: Mutant .:Alias: Gambit .:Year Born/Timeline: Unknown (Remy is in his twenties, but he doesn't know his real birthday and therefore his actual age) .:Affiliation: X-Men
Appearance
.:Physical Appearance: Remy is a tall and imposing man, possessing a muscular and athletic frame. With glowing-red pupils set against jet-black sclera, Remy is a striking individual, his mutant condition observable by this effect his powers have had on his body. He is an attractive and handsome individual, his charismatic charm reflected in his mannerisms and facial expressions. Remy's hair is brown and is of a medium/long-length. As a true ladies man, Remy likes to look after himself and his appearance, maintaining a growth of stubble on his chiselled face, on which he often has a smile on his which reflects his easy-going nature. With a commanding stare and a lethal strut, Remy appears as the epitome of cool, and when dressed in his trademark long, brown-leather trenchcoat and holding his favoured weapon (his extending Bo-Staff) Remy is a formidable opponent.
.:Height: 6'2"/188cm .:Portrayed by: Taylor Kitsch
Personality
.:Personality: Ever since he was a child, Remy has been a brave, brash, confident and self-assured individual. His childhood was spent as a street-thief, his personality developing alongside his growing pick-pocketing abilities. This means Remy is very cool under pressure and can handle situations with an air of boldness. His often fearless nature can, however, bring problems, and he can be perceived by others as a crass and arrogant person. Despite this, Remy is an easy-going, calm and relaxed gentleman.
Due to his past as a thief, Remy is by nature constantly aware of his surroundings, weighing up any and all situations he finds himself in. He is able to think well on his feet and can adapt to pressurised scenarios confidently. This can sometimes lead to over-confidence which can be a downfall of his personality. In physical situations Remy's coolness maintains, his nerve is not easily tested, even when he is faced with impossible odds. Remy likes to play card-games and always keeps a deck of cards on him. He is a formidable poker player who can play-act and bluff to guard his game, which reflects hugely in his overall personality.
Remy is also very much an individual, only really trusting himself and his own decisions. This means he puts up a guard when people try to get to know him. He doesn't like to reveal emotion in front of people, especially those he does not know well enough. These traits combine to create a very complex persona, his natural guard meaning it is hard for people to really get under his skin. Remy can work well in team scenarios and will fight loyally for and with those he feels he can trust. It is however difficult to gain that trust, Remy's nature dictated by events in both his love-life and his past as a Master Thief.
A major part of Remy's personality is what he perceives to be irresistible charm. Remy loves to flirt with the opposite sex, and enjoys the attention of the ladies. His over-confidence and perceived arrogance can sometimes lead him into hot water in encounters with the fairer sex, but he would never let this get to him, and if it did he would not allow it to be shown.
To those he trusts and holds close, Remy is a loyal and calming influence, and his empathetic nature means he is easy to hold a conversation with. Remy is the archetypal loveable rogue, speaking with a Cajun accent and a voice as smooth as honey. Remy's confidence means he is relaxed in most situations and it is difficult to make him angry. When he does reach boiling point, Remy focuses himself on his adversary and lashes out with ferocity and tenacity.
.:Powers/Abilities: Remy has the mutant ability to alter the molecular state of an inanimate object, "charging" the potential energy it possesses with kinetic energy from his own body. He does this by touch, usually with his hands. When he has charged an object, it appears with a pink-neon glow. This glow remains until either the potential energy expires or explodes, depending on Remy's intentions. The amount of charge Remy can apply to an object depends on its size; the larger the object the longer it takes to charge the potential energy it contains. Remy carries a deck of cards with him wherever he goes, as he finds playing cards easy to charge and thus use as weapons (cards can be charged almost instantaneously due to their small size and mass). He also carries an extendable Bo-staff which Remy can charge, giving it additional power when using it in combat situations. The explosions are relative to the mass of the object, so his cards gain the explosive power of a hand-grenade when they impact.
Secondly, the effect his own body has with his mutation allows Remy particular superhuman traits in terms of physicality. This means his own body is charged, allowing him flexibility/dexterity and acrobatic agility. These effects mean Remy is a tough opponent in combat and his acrobatic fighting style gives him an advantage when in such situations.
A side-effect of Remy's power is the static energy surrounding his brain, which makes it hard for telepaths to identify and gain access to his mind. He is not completely immune to telepathic mutants, but the static energy means it is extremely uncomfortable and sometimes painful for telepaths to infiltrate Remy's mind.
Weaknesses: Remy is not able to charge a sentient being, meaning that people and animals cannot be affected by his kinetic charge. He is also unable to charge liquids and gases. Remy is also morally driven by his positive charm and cannot help but attempt to aide people in distress, especially ladies. This can become a hindrance to Remy as it means he often puts himself in situations that can become troublesome and difficult.
Also, the static energy that his brain inadvertently creates in relation to his mutation means that though his mind is relatively free from the shackles of telepathic control, he cannot sense the communicative conversations going on around him. So if Professor Xavier wanted to communicate to all of his X-Men via his telepathic abilities, Remy is not contactable in this way as others may be.
History
.:Birthplace: New Orleans, Louisiana .:Family: Unknown (Remy is an orphan and his only known relatives are his adopted family, the LeBeau clan) .:Occupation: Master thief, saboteur and adventurer .:Current Location of Residence: Xavier's Institute For The Gifted .:History: Stolen from the hospital that he was born in by members of the New Orleans Thieves' Guild who believed him to be an important, messianic figure, Remy LeBeau has never known his real parents. Nicknamed 'Le Diable Blanc', his unique eye condition was recognised by members of the Guild who believed Remy was the incarnation of a prophesied figure who would unite the Guild with their historic enemies and rivals, the Assassin's Guild.
Remy was adopted into the Guild and spent his childhood learning the ways of the thief, showing a real aptitude for the art from a very young age, and being taken in by the leading family, the LeBeau's. Living with the family his thieving skills developed dramatically; The Cajun excelled in his stealth abilities which have gone from strength to strength as he has gotten older, and he has never found a lock that he has been unable to pick. Remy also developed his fighting skills, becoming especially talented at Savat, a French martial art. Discovering his mutant powers in his teens, Remy hid his abilities from the family, afraid that if they found out he might be abandoned by the people he had grown to love and trust the most. His mutation afforded Remy the ability to charge inanimate objects with kinetic energy, causing the object to glow a bright pink colour until the point it exploded. Remy's favourite weapon became a charged playing card, which he learnt to skilfully toss at adversaries. His mutant condition also allowed Remy superhuman acrobatic abilities. Remy was finding himself able to move with supreme agility and dexterity, and combining these abilities with a natural affinity for Bo-fighting, Remy was evolving into a dangerous weapon.
After being betrothed to the prominent Assassin's Guild member Bella Donna in an effort to stabilise the warring clans, Remy was forced to leave his home city when he killed Bella Donna's brother in a duel. Being banished was a hugely difficult thing for the 18-year old Remy to accept, and his trust in people disintegrated after his fears of being cut out of the Guild came true. This episode in Remy's life affected him deeply, his lone-wolf, self-reliant persona being formulated in the coming years as he wandered from town to town, city to city and country to country, developing both his thievery and mutant skills as he went.
During this time, Remy met the mysterious Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister, who promised Remy that he could teach the young mutant how to control his powers which were becoming difficult for the Cajun to command. Removing a small piece of Remy's brain in a surgical procedure, Remy could now control his powers with precision. The problem was that Essex now had Remy in his pocket. Sinister called in the debt by instructing Remy to assemble the misfit group of assassins called the Marauders. In an effort to make up for his transgressions, the Cajun attempted to thwart the Marauders as they massacred the mutant community known as the Morlocks, saving the life of a certain young mutant called Marrow.
Not long after the Mutant Massacre, Remy was captured by William Styker and taken to a mysterious, high-level secret facility known as 'Three Mile Island'. Plans had been made to attempt to extract Remy's mutant ability to be used in a Frankenstein-esque experiment that would see the ultimate mutant being created. But after being locked away for almost two years, the Cajun was able to use his lock-picking and stealth skills to manage to escape from The Island. Only weeks later, the Cajun was tracked down by Wolverine who persuaded Remy to take him to Three Mile Island. After a protracted battle, Remy helped Wolverine set the mutants on the island free and the two said their goodbyes.
Now a 20-year old with no aims in life, Remy sought out the help of Charles Xavier, after randomly hearing about Xavier's Institute in a conversation with a fellow mutant. Remy decided he should enquire whether the esteemed Professor would take the Cajun under his wing, despite his troubled past.
Sample Post
In a dark and dingy New York City backstreet alleyway, on a cold and rainy winter evening, the sound of footsteps begin to get louder and louder. All of a sudden, sprinting around the corner and coming into view, the tall outline of a man appeared, the shadow of a long trench-coat, almost cape-like, flapping behind him as he ran. A quick look to his rear and the man darts over a nearby wall, showing amazing physical agility to hop effortlessly up and onto the top of the 12-ft wall, before plunging silently down the other side and completely out of view.
Not far behind the man was a gang of loutish thugs, seemingly drunk and shouting obscenities toward the direction of the man they were chasing.
"Dirty stinkin' mutie! I want my money back or we're goin-a cut you up and see what's inside your disgustin' head!"
The sounds of hushing could be heard as the men ran into the dark alley, realising that their target couldn't be very far away.
"He must be around here somewhere," whispered the leader of the gang, a horrible, ugly-looking brute standing at well over 6-feet tall. Pointing around, Mr Ugly instructed his similarly well-groomed cohorts to check any obvious hiding places that the mysterious man could be hiding.
"Whoever finds that disgustin' freak first gets to go first with Stacey when we get back to the bar," he spat as he tried to speak quietly, failing dramatically and snarling the words louder and louder as he told of the reward granted for finding their prey.
As the men dispersed, some heading further into the darkness of the alleyway, some checking behind garbage containers, some disappearing behind buildings, the leader of the walked carefully towards the wall where the man had decided to hide. The drunken fiend leaned up against the wall and took out a pack of cigarettes from a pocket on the inside of his jacket, flicking the bottom of the pack to reveal a fresh cigarette poking it's head out amongst the others. Checking around the alleyway, the ugly ogre lifted the packet up slowly to his mouth, his eyes attempting to focus in the darkness of the alley. Out of nowhere, a whisper resonated from above in a strong Cajun accent.
"Well ah thank you, sir. I would jus' love a cigarette..."
The startled drunken yob jumped like he had seen a ghost, dropping the cigarette packet from his grasp and down on to the dirt below, minus the single cigarette that he had just tried to smoke. Looking up above him, the brute saw the silhouette of a man standing on the wall, the cigarette now dangling from his lips, eyes glowing red.
"You muthafu-" The drunken lout's words were halted as a sharp boot to his face knocked him down to the ground, his head landing right next to the pack of cigarettes he had dropped moments earlier.
Dropping down next to the fallen brute, the mysterious man with the Cajun accent lit the cigarette held now tightly in his pursed lips. Taking a pull and breathing out a lungful of smoke, the Cajun smiled as he placed his foot on the petrified lout's mouth, pushing down hard until a small crack could be heard from his jaw.
"Thanks for the smoke, mon ami..." whispered the Cajun man with the glowing red eyes, before he turned and disappeared into the dark alleyway in the direction of the rest of the gang. Snivelling on the dirt, the drunk slowly sat up against the wall, breathing deeply and attempting to gather himself together from the silent assault he had just suffered.
